Opinion: Canada must unlock itself from reliance on fossil fuels

An associate professor of geography and civil engineering at the University of Victoria says Canada’s policy makers must focus on ways to decarbonize the economy and not lock in fossil fuels.

Policies meant to steer low-carbon transition in the right direction are simply reinforcing fossil fuels by supporting improper innovations, Christina Hoicka says, adding research conducted at the University of Victoria suggests Canada is continuing its reliance on fossil fuels and not on the changes that are needed.

Many low-carbon innovations needed to meet reduced greenhouse gas emission targets are being implemented too slowly, she says.
